Our Program

Our Efforts

To date, we have provided and administered medical treatment for more than 500 individuals, which include women, men and children who experience ongoing health issues due to trauma resulting from rape, physical abuse and psychological violence. After our treatments, women who were not able to conceive due to chronic post-traumatic gynecological complications are now able to become pregnant and deliver healthy babies. We provide pre- and post- counseling HIV testing to individuals and families. This helps to alleviate the fear, strengthen and educate those with a positive HIV result.

Our Focus So Far

The Ivory Coast’s post-electoral violence of 2011 shattered the lives of many. Due to the fear of continued violence in their communities they sought refuge in the neighboring country Liberia. Currently, there are about 20,000 Ivorians residing in Liberia, a majority of them live in the Grand Gedeh County which hosts over 11,000 refugees.
A great number of this traumatized population were forced to be sex slaves, subjected to gang rape, and tortured by armed groups.
Some of them now live in the surrounding areas, but some have stayed in a refugee camp which hosts more than 8,000 refugees. Those who are scattered in communities have no access to health services, making it difficult for individuals with physical and psychological wounds to recover and rebuild their lives. Refugees in the camp are provided with basic health services. However, they are not provided with adequate follow-up care, which leaves them vulnerable to disease, recurring illnesses and poor mental health, which can lead to feelings of despair and suicide.

Our Approach

Research shows that individuals react differently to traumatic events. A deep understanding and knowledge of these individuals’ cultural, spiritual, psychological, psychosocial and socio-economical context is crucial and this is the underlying philosophy that drives BRAID Africa’s service delivery programs. Our services are culturally sensitive and delivered by qualified professionals in languages and dialects that individuals understand. Complete confidentiality is also offered and maintained.
