Pushing Past Trauma
When impoverished regions are ravished by war and terror those who survive are left feeling hopeless and broken, resulting in increased devastation and poverty impeding on survivors efforts to regain one's self. To rebuild such community, one needs to take an approach that meets its norms.
Six years after the war, we achieved our goal of restoring the Ivorian refugee survivors’ physical health. The majority of the refugee survivors’ who received treatment have elected to stay in Liberia, a country that is struggling to recover from its own 14 years of conflict. Our services now extend to include the Liberian villages which are hosting the Ivorian refugees.
This year BRAID Africa provided funding to Sehwein village agricultural cooperative for the provision of school materials for the community elementary school. For this community pushing past trauma begins with getting their children back to school. Both refugees and host put their efforts together to refurbish the damaged school. The school opens early March, 2018 with 25 children and now has 150 kids.

Pushing past Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Ms. Felicité is among the thousands who were victimized and brutalized during the war. In the aftermath, Felicité was left with feelings of rage, fear and uncertainty. When our staff saw her living conditions and spoke to her family, they learned that she had become so traumatized by what she had experienced that she would often try to run away. Not wanting her to harm herself or get lost, her family felt that their only solution was to handcuff her to a tree. This is how we first met her. We also discovered that her medications were just a temporary solution because once they wore off, her feelings of disillusionment and anger would return. Her son told us about a local traditional healer that would be able to help, but money was a barrier. So, we provided the funds for her treatment. When she had fully recovered, she decided that building a business would help her to regain a sense of pride, confidence, strength, and independence. We helped her with the cost of setting up her business and can say that she is currently self-sufficient, healthy, and productive.
